On April 15 at noon, the magnificent and gothic Cathedral of Notre Dame suffered a massive fire that brought down the roof of lead which was being repaired, causing material losses such as the fall of the emblematic 19th century needle, the destruction of the vault, the armor, glass works, and painting stained by water.
However, it was possible to recover some sculptures from the roof which had been removed earlier, so they were protected from fire.
Likewise, the two bell towers, the main works, the golden cross, the crown of thorns and the tunic of Saint Louis could be saved and stored in the City Hall of Paris.
The origin of the fire is not known yet. Although there are some hypotheses about it, in the first place everything indicates that the rehabilitation works that began in 2018 and were due to finish in 2020, led to this tragedy. Experts affirmed that there were missing extreme security measures and firewalls in the restoration works.
According to a report the UNESCO had already warned in 2000 of damage caused by storms. Despite the universal value of the building, the restoration work began a decade later. Now, families and organizations around the world are doing charity, donating millions of euros for the cathedral restoration.
In conclusion, it is important that both UNESCO and the European Union appeal for a better investment in the maintenance of cultural heritages to preserve our history and signs of identity as humanity.
